A Guide for Parents

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways by 10 degrees or more, often during growth spurts in childhood or adolescence. This curve may also involve rotation of the vertebrae, which can affect posture and in more severe cases, reduce chest expansion and lung capacity.

Types of scoliosis include:

  • Idiopathic scoliosis: The most common type, usually appearing in children or teens without a clear cause.

  • Neuromuscular scoliosis: Linked to conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy.

  • Congenital scoliosis: Caused by spinal bones developing abnormally before birth.

Early detection is key because scoliosis can progress during growth.

What Happens at a Free Scoliosis Screening?

A free scoliosis screen is a gentle, 10–15 minute check designed to spot early signs of spinal curvature.

During the screening, we look at:

  • Posture from the front, side, and back

  • Shoulder and hip alignment

  • Ribcage symmetry

  • Spinal shape during a forward‑bend test

  • Any areas of stiffness, discomfort, or muscle imbalance

If everything looks typical, you’ll receive reassurance and simple tips to support posture and strength. If we notice anything that needs a closer look, we’ll talk through the next steps and whether a full physiotherapy assessment would be helpful.

What Should My Child Wear?

To get the clearest view of the spine, it helps if your child wears:

  • A singlet, crop top, or sports bra

  • Shorts or leggings

  • Hair tied up if it covers the upper back

If your child prefers to stay more covered, that’s completely fine. We can always work around comfort levels.

Before You Arrive: The Pre‑Screening Questionnaire

Before your appointment, you’ll receive a short pre‑screening questionnaire. It takes just a couple of minutes and helps us tailor the screening to your child’s needs. This means we can focus on what matters most and make the session as efficient and reassuring as possible.

What the Questionnaire Covers

You can expect simple, practical questions about:

  • Recent growth spurts

  • Family history of scoliosis

  • Any posture changes you’ve noticed

  • Back pain, stiffness, or fatigue

  • Previous injuries or relevant medical history

It’s quick, clear, and designed to help us understand your child’s spine before you walk through the door.

How Your Information Is Used

Your answers guide the screening and ensure we don’t miss anything important. Your information is confidential and you will also receive a copy of our Privacy Policy to explain how we store your information.

Who Should Attend a Screening?

Screenings are especially helpful for:

  • Children aged 8–15

  • Teens going through rapid growth

  • Kids with a family history of scoliosis

  • Anyone noticing uneven shoulders, leaning posture, or back discomfort

Why Offer Free Screenings?

School holidays are the perfect time to check in on posture and growth. Many families are busy during the school term, and subtle changes can go unnoticed. A free screening gives parents clarity, reassurance, and early guidance without any cost or commitment.

In the ACT, routine school‑based scoliosis checks have largely been phased out, which means many children aren’t being screened unless families seek it out themselves. Offering free screenings helps fill that gap, giving parents an easy, accessible option if they have concerns.

Book Your Free Screening

If you’d like to secure a spot during the school holidays, you can book online or contact the clinic directly. Early detection is simple, quick, and can make a meaningful difference to your child’s long‑term spinal health.
